Why use a position size calculator?

Risk management is what separates traders who survive from traders who blow accounts. A position sizer takes the guesswork out of every trade.

Protect your capital

Risking too much on a single trade is the fastest way to blow an account. Enter your risk % and stop loss distance — the calculator tells you the exact lot size to keep your exposure in check.

Consistent risk across instruments

A 20-pip stop on EUR/USD and a 20-pip stop on XAU/USD don't risk the same dollar amount. The calculator accounts for pip values per instrument so your risk stays consistent.

Account currency conversion

Trading a USD-quoted pair from an AUD account? The calculator uses live exchange rates to convert pip values into your account currency so the sizing is accurate — not off by 30%.

Covers forex, gold, indices & futures

Works across all major instruments — forex pairs, spot gold and silver, E-mini and Micro futures (NQ, ES), and crypto. Pip values, tick sizes and contract specs are built in.

Frequently asked questions

What is a position size calculator?
A position size calculator (also called a lot size calculator) tells you exactly how many lots or contracts to trade based on your account size, the percentage you're willing to risk, and the distance to your stop loss. It removes guesswork from risk management so every trade risks a consistent dollar amount.
How do I calculate lot size in forex?
Lot size = (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop Loss in pips × Pip Value). For example, a $10,000 account risking 1% with a 50-pip stop on EUR/USD: ($10,000 × 0.01) ÷ (50 × $10) = 0.20 lots. This calculator does the math instantly for 60+ instruments including forex, gold, indices, crypto and futures.
Is this lot size calculator free?
Yes — completely free, no signup or credit card required. Open the page, enter your numbers, and get instant lot sizing. It's part of The Trading Terminal's free tool suite.
What instruments does the position size calculator support?
Over 60 instruments across forex pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, etc.), metals (XAU/USD gold, XAG/USD silver), indices (NAS100, US30, SPX500), crypto (BTC/USD, ETH/USD), and futures (NQ, ES, YM, GC). Each instrument uses the correct contract size and pip value.
What is the difference between a lot and a position size?
A lot is the standardised unit of quantity in trading — 1 standard lot in forex equals 100,000 units of the base currency. Position size is the broader concept: how large your trade is relative to your account. This calculator converts your risk parameters into the correct lot size so your position is sized properly for your risk tolerance.
