What Is a Trading Journal?

A trading journal is a record of every trade you take, kept so you can review your performance instead of relying on memory. At its simplest, it's a trade tracker — a place that logs entry, exit, size and outcome for each trade. But a spreadsheet that only records those fields tells you what happened, not why. A serious trading journal needs to capture the context around each trade — the setup, the session, the confluences that lined up, any mistakes made, and how you felt going into it — so that months of trades become a dataset you can actually learn from, not just a list of numbers.

That distinction matters more the longer you trade. A trade tracker with 20 entries doesn't tell you much. The same tracker with 500 entries, tagged consistently, can tell you exactly which setup makes you money, which session drains it, and which single mistake is costing you the most.

Why a Spreadsheet Isn't Enough

A spreadsheet can hold your trades, but it can't analyse them for you. Once you're past a couple hundred trades, manually filtering by setup, calculating win rate per session, or tallying up what each mistake actually cost you becomes a project of its own — one most traders never finish, so the journal quietly stops getting updated.

The Trading Terminal does that analysis automatically. Mistake Cost Analysis puts a dollar figure on every rule you break, so "I keep moving my stop loss" becomes "moving my stop loss has cost me $2,400 this quarter." Trader DNA breaks your results down by instrument, session, setup, direction and timeframe without you building a single pivot table. Edge Score rates your overall edge 0–100 from win rate, expectancy, drawdown control and rule adherence, so you have one number that tells you if you're actually improving. None of this requires formulas — you tag the trade once, and the breakdown happens on its own.

Built for Prop Firm Rules

Funded accounts and evaluations fail on rule breaches as often as they fail on strategy. Risk Desk calculates your daily risk budget from your account's actual loss limit, shows Distance to Breach bars for both daily loss and max drawdown, and tracks trailing drawdown in real time — so you see the breach coming before it happens, not after. Do Not Trade scans your own history and warns you before you enter conditions that have historically blown accounts. Accounts manager keeps every evaluation, funded and live account separate, so one challenge's numbers never bleed into another's.

FAQ
Common questions
What is a trading journal?
A trading journal is a record of every trade you take — entry, exit, size, setup and outcome — kept so you can review your performance over time instead of relying on memory or gut feel. A good one goes further than a basic trade tracker, breaking your results down by setup, session and mistake so you can see exactly what's working.
What should I include in a trading journal?
At minimum: instrument, direction, entry and exit price, position size, R:R, setup, session, outcome and any mistakes made. The Trading Terminal also captures confluences, screenshots, notes, and emotion and discipline ratings so psychology and execution quality show up in your analytics, not just P&L.
What is the best free trading journal?
The Trading Terminal's Free plan includes the full trade journal, real-time dashboard, accounts manager, position sizer, economic calendar and prop firms guide — one account, up to 30 trades per month, no card required. Most competing journals either charge from the first trade or cap core features like setup analytics behind a paywall.
How do I track my trades properly?
Log every trade the same way, every time — same fields, same setup names — so your data stays comparable. Then review it by setup, session and mistake rather than just watching your total P&L. The Trading Terminal automates this: tag a trade once and Mistake Cost Analysis, Trader DNA and Edge Score do the breakdown for you.
Does The Trading Terminal work for prop firm traders?
Yes — Risk Desk tracks daily loss limits, max drawdown and distance to breach in real time, and Do Not Trade warns you before entering conditions that historically blow accounts. Accounts manager lets you track evaluation, funded, live and demo accounts independently, so one challenge's numbers never mix with another's.
